Put Your Bra On: The Struggles of Working From Home and How to Stay Motivated

Working from home sounds like a dream for many – no commute, no need to get dressed, and the ability to work from the comfort of your own space. However, the reality is often more challenging than we expect. Maintaining focus, staying motivated, and taking pride in our work can become difficult when the lines between personal space and work life blur. One day blends into the next, and before you know it, pajamas have become your daily uniform, signaling your brain to stay in a state of relaxation.

A wise piece of advice I received early in my work-from-home journey was simple: dress for the activity you want to accomplish. It might sound silly at first, but it makes a huge difference. If I want to exercise and make healthier choices, I put on my workout clothes first thing in the morning. Whether I take the dog for a walk, do some stretching, or get through a full cardio session, the act of putting on my gym wear sets the tone for the day. It tells my brain that I’m ready for movement, and more often than not, my actions follow.

The same principle applies to working from home. Just because we’re at home doesn’t mean we should skip our daily routines or lose the sense of accomplishment that comes with preparing for the day. A lot of women, myself included, find comfort in removing their bra at the end of the day—it’s a signal to relax, unwind, and let go. But when we’re trying to start our day and tackle a to-do list, we need the opposite cue. So, what do we do? We put the bra back on.

When we get dressed for our day—whether it's work clothes, house chore clothes, or even streetwear—we’re telling our brain that it’s time to be productive. We may not be heading to a brick-and-mortar office, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look and feel like the professionals we are. This shift in mindset is small but significant. It’s not just about the bra or the clothes—it’s about what they represent. We’re preparing ourselves mentally and physically to tackle the tasks in front of us.

Now, this doesn’t mean it’s a magic fix. You still have to make the effort to get your work done and accomplish the goals you’ve set for yourself. But putting on whatever "professional" wear works for you can give you that extra boost of motivation. It’s about setting yourself up for success, even in small ways. Make your bed, grab your morning coffee, and get dressed. Take pride in your work-from-home life, because it’s just as important as the work you did in an office.

Transitioning to remote work is an adjustment, but with a few simple tweaks to your routine, you can find your groove. Whether you’re trying to be more active, like me, or simply want to feel more productive during the day, the way you start your morning sets the tone for everything that follows.

So, tomorrow morning, when you’re tempted to stay in your pajamas or skip your usual routine, I encourage you to do one thing: put your bra on. Take on the day with confidence and a sense of purpose. You are capable of achieving more than you know—sometimes all it takes is a little shift in mindset and the right outfit.

You’ve got this. Be great, because you are great!
